Head Start LogoHead Start offers comprehensive services to pre-school children and their families who meet the income guidelines. Head Start has the overall objective of breaking the cycle of poverty by preparing pre-school age children to be effective learners and by assisting families to achieve greater economic, social and personal self sufficiency in support of their children. 

City of Rockford Human Services Head Start Winnebago County residents. Services include:

  • Pre-school Education with part-day, full-day, home base and child care options
  • Child Development curriculum that addresses individual needs of children
  • English and Spanish pre-school classes
  • Door-to-door bus transportation available for part-day option
  • Developmental screening for all children
  • Parent Involvement, including volunteer opportunities, parent training and education
  • Family Literacy Events and Family Fun Nights
  • Family Support Services to assist families in meeting their goals toward education, housing and job-related skills
  • Mental Health screenings and services for children and families in need
  • Health services, providing support and resources for medical and dental services in the community
  • Support for transition to Kindergarten
  • Collaborations with many local agencies to meet the needs of children and families.

Children benefit from a comprehensive program which fosters growth and development and remedies problems through a broad range of services.  The child's family, as well as the community, must be involved in providing these services.  The program strives to maximize a child's strengths and provide a rich environment, exposing each child to a variety of successful experiences. 

Parent participation is vital.  Parents are the first and most important educators of their children.   

Services, information and referrals help parents and caretakers in their efforts to meet the basic needs of all family members.  Children are more likely to achieve and maintain educational gains if parents or caretakers can meet the needs of the entire family.  To provide support to families Head Start offers resources for:

  • A healthy diet.
  • Safe, affordable, stable housing.
  • A safe neighborhood and community.
  • Accessible/affordable physical and mental health care and treatment.
  • Opportunities to be a productive, contributing member of family and community.
  • Quality, affordable child care
