Human Resources Department FAQs

Where can I find a list of your current job openings?

Job openings are listed on the Job Postings Page.

May I apply for positions that are not currently posted?

No. We only accept applications and/or resumes for open posted positions.

Do I need to complete a separate application for each position I want to apply for?

Yes. You must submit a separate application for each posted position in which you are interested.

Are applications and resume kept on file?

No. Because of the volume of applications we receive, and the need for current information, we do not keep applications and resumes on file. Even if you applied for the exact same job recently, you will need to submit a new application and/or resume.

Once I have submitted my application/resume, what is the review process?

Most job postings include a closing date when applications will no longer be accepted. After the closing date, the Human Resources Specialist recruiting for the position will screen applicants for the minimum qualifications and then review qualified applicants with the department hiring manager. Candidates whose qualifications best meet the department's needs for the position will then be contacted for testing and/or interviews. The process may take 2-3 weeks from closing date to scheduling of testing and/or interviews depending on the number of applications received and other factors. Only candidates selected for testing and/or interviews will be contacted.

Are all applicants contact about the status of their application?

Due to the volume of applications we receive and our available resources, only those candidates selected for testing and/or interviews are contacted. For most positions, we receive over 100 applications and some positions have exceeded 300 applications. Consequently, it is not feasible to notify everyone who applies.

Are all qualified applicants given the opportunity to test and/or interview?

Unfortunately no. Due to available resources and the volume of applications we receive, it is not feasible to give every qualified candidate an opportunity to test and/or interview. Departments only select those candidates they feel are the best qualified and most closely meet the needs of the position.

What does it mean if a position is posted as "Open Until Filled" or "Applications will be accepted until the position is filled"?

This means that applications will continue to be accepted for the position until a suitable candidate is selected and accepts an offer of employment. For these positions, it is in your best interest to apply as soon as possible since applications are reviewed as soon as they are received and the vacancy may close without any advanced notice. Depending on the needs of the position and the qualifications of those applying, these positions may take more than 4 weeks before candidates are contacted for testing and/or interviews.

What if I need special accommodations if I am selected for testing or an interview?

Individuals needing disability-related accommodations for testing or interviews should request them in advance by contacting the Human Resources Department at (815) 987-5580.

Should I also send my application/resume directly to the City Department where the vacancy exists? Will this give me a better chance at an interview?

No. All applications and resumes must be submitted to the Human Resources Department for consideration via the online application program. Applications and resumes received by the departments are forwarded to Human Resources for review. Submitting your application directly to the department could cause a delay with it being submitted in a timely manner and may cause your application to be considered late and therefore not accepted.
