Hiring Process

General Applicant Information:
Applications are only accepted for positions which are currently posted.  Applications and resumes submitted for positions which are not currently posted or that do not specify the title of the position you are applying for will not be accepted.  Incomplete applications and/or resumes lacking sufficient evidence of qualifications and other necessary information may also not be accepted.  For a list of currently posted positions, please click on Employment.

Applications/resumes must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. CST by the deadline listed on the job posting.  Applications not received by 5:00 p.m. on the closing date will not be considered. For further information on how to submit your application or resume, click on Employment.  A new application must be submitted each time you want to apply for a posted position, even if it is a position for which you have previously applied.

Be sure to read our employment application very carefully and answer all questions, even if you are submitting a resume with your application.  Your application must be completed in its entirety to be considered for employment.  Resumes will be accepted without an official City employment application, but all candidates selected for testing or interviews will be required to complete an application.  Any and all applications, resumes and additional materials submitted become the property of the City of Rockford.  Applicants are therefore encouraged to make all necessary copies in advance.

After the closing date for the posting, a Human Resources Specialist will screen all applications for minimum qualifications and then review qualified applicants with the department hiring manager.  All applications are thoroughly reviewed and considered based on overall experience and qualifications.  Not all applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be selected for consideration.  Candidates whose qualifications appear to best meet the department's needs for the position will be contacted for testing, if applicable, and/or interviews.  This process may take from 2-4 weeks.

The City of Rockford will provide reasonable accommodations upon request to individuals with disabilities during the selection process.

Thorough reference checks are completed on all final applicants prior to receiving an offer of employment.  Additional background checks on final candidates may be required for some positions prior to confirming an offer of employment.
