How to Recover Property and Vehicles

Vehicle Impounds

Vehicles impounded for a  DUI related offense (minimum impound time of 12 hours), a mandatory insurance violation or because it had been abandoned, will be taken to and stored at the Greater Rockford Auto Auction (GRAA), located at 5937 Sandy Hollow Road, Rockford, IL.  

Please contact GRAA at 815-874-7800 for questions about recovering vehicles impounded there.  A representatives from GRAA will give you the total impound fee and explain how to pick up your vehicle.  The impound fee must be paid in cash.   You will be required to show proof of vehicle ownership and proof of vehicle insurance to a GRAA representative before the vehicle is released.

Recovering an impounded vehicle          

FEES - The following fees will be due at the Greater Rockford Auto Auction (GRAA) to claim your vehicle: (FEES SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

Tow Bill……………………………………. $ 43.00

Impound Fee………………………..…. $100.00, $500.00 or $1,000.00

Release Charge……………………..… $ 75.00

Storage (per calendar day)……….. $ 27.00

 

Effective January 1, 2015, the impound fee for a vehicle impounded is increased from $500 to $1,000 for the listed offenses.

  • Promoting Prostitution
  • Promoting Juvenile Prostitution
  • Trafficking in Persons
  • Patronizing a Prostitute
  • Patronizing a Minor Engaged in Prostitution

 

Monthly Auction
The following list of vehicles abandoned and/or unclaimed in the City of Rockford will be sold at public auction on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. at the Greater Rockford Auto Auction, 5937 Sandy Hollow Road, Rockford, IL.  The owners may claim said vehicle at the Greater Rockford Auto Auction by paying the associated redemption fees on or before June 8, 2016.

Purchasers will be issued a "Certficate of Purchase".  Payment is due at the conclusion of the auction.  Only case or check made payable to the "Greater Rockford Auto Auction" will be accepted.

Recovering items classified as found or recovered property 

To recover items that are classified as property (found purses, wallets, cell phones, etc.) and not considered evidence,  please call 779-500-6514 during business hours (8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday) for assistance and instructions on how, when and where you can recover your property. 

The listed property has been abandoned, lost, or stolen and has been recovered in the City of Rockford without identification as to the ownership or authorization to possess or is unclaimed and the location of the owner is unknown.  

Property claims should be made to the Rockford Police Department, Evidence and Property Unit, 420 W. State Street, Rockford IL  61101.  779-500-6514

Persons claiming property shall provide reasonable and satisfactory proof of his or her ownership or right to possession of the property being claimed.

Recovering items classified as evidence
(Recoverd by police during an investigation) 
The Evidence and Property Division can not release any item classified as evidence until the item has been released by the Winnebago County States Attorney’s Office (815-319-4700) or the Rockford Police Department, District Commander (779-500-6555) and it has been reclassified as property.  Please contact the Winnebago County States Attorney’s Office or the Rockford Police Detective Bureau with questions about all items, including vehicles, classified as evidence.
Buying seized property                
Items seized by the Rockford Police Department that are not claimed and/or the Police Department is unable to otherwise return to an owner, are sold at auction.  Items auctioned include bicycles, electronic equipment and numerous other items.
Impounded Vehicles Auctions
