Recovering items classified as property

To recover items that are classified as property (found purses, wallets, cell phones, etc.) and not considered evidence, please call 815-987-5843 during business hours (8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Monday-Friday) for assistance and instructions on how, when and where you can recover your property.
Recovering items classified as evidence

The Evidence and Property Division can not release any item classified as evidence until the item has been released by the Winnebago County States Attorney’s Office (815-987-3160) or the Rockford Police Detective Bureau (815-987-5878) and it has been reclassified as property. Please contact the Winnebago County States Attorney’s Office or the Rockford Police Detective Bureau with questions about all items, including vehicles, classified as evidence.
Recovering an impounded vehicle
Vehicles impounded for a DUI related offense (minimum impound time of 12 hours), a mandatory insurance violation or because it had been abandoned, will be taken to and stored at the Greater Rockford Auto Auction (GRAA), located at 5937 Sandy Hollow Road, Rockford, IL. (Click here for a map and directions) Please contact the GRAA at 815-874-7800 for questions about recovering vehicles impounded there. A representatives from GRAA will give you the total impound fee and explain how to pick up your vehicle. The impound fee must be paid in cash. You will be required to show proof of vehicle ownership and proof of vehicle insurance to a GRAA representative before the vehicle is released.
Buying seized property
Items seized by the Rockford Police Department that are not claimed and/or the Police Department is unable to otherwise return to an owner, are sold at auction by Action Auctioneering, located at 1339 S. Meridian Rd., Rockford, IL., on the third Saturday of each month at 10:00 A.M. Items auctioned include bicycles, electronic equipment and numerous other items.
Impounded Vehicles
Only specially licensed dealers are allowed to bid on vehicles eligible for auction. The Greater Rockford Auto Auction, located at 5937 Sandy Hollow Road, Rockford, IL, holds auctions every Wednesday. (Click here for a map and directions) Please contact the GRAA at 815-874-7800 with any questions.
