Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

The City of Rockford, Illinois EPA, and Four Rivers Sanitation Authority co-operate the Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Center where Illinois residents (not businesses) can dispose of common household hazardous waste items. The facility is located at 3333 Kishwaukee Street and is open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m., excluding the holidays of New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Independence Day and Christmas. Commonly generated acceptable hazardous wastes includes the following: aerosols, corrosives, oxidizers, solvents, oil-based paints, waste oil, pesticides, fertilizers, batteries (no alkaline), and fluorescent lamps (see list).  Up to four (4) passenger tires (less metal rims) per vehicle are also accepted at the site for Rockford residents only.

Latex paint will not be accepted.  Residents are encourage to dispose of containers of latex paint by leaving them open to dry. Mixing in cat litter, oil dry, or cement powder will speed up the solidification process. Paint cans containing completely dry paint, with lids removed, should then be placed next to garbage cans containing general household refuse on normal pick-up days. Other unacceptable wastes generally include radioactive waste, compressed gas, explosives, large drums, and other bulk packaged materials. Waste generated from a commercial or agricultural source or large volume containers greater than 5 gallons, will not be accepted. The facility accepts a large variety of batteries with the exception of alkaline and automotive batteries.  Alkaline batteries should be discarded with your general trash. Automotive batteries should be returned to a local automotive or battery retailer for proper recycling.  Please refer to the Battery Management Guide to determine how to properly dispose of several common battery types.  The facility will not accept prescription medication and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals. Please refer to the Pharmaceuticals section of our website for medication disposal options.

To navigate to the drop-off site from Kishwaukee Street, please take the service road west immediately south of Martin Road where you will pass a guard shack. Signage will then direct you to the drive-up processing area.  The service road is immediately north of Four Rivers Sanitation Authority's office building.
